Gustave Doré (1832–83 )is one of the most impresive artists of the 19th century. As a fifteen year old he began his career as a caricaturist. He moved on to illustration which brought him international fame. Later he embraced other areas as well including drawing, painting, watercolour, engraving and sculpture.
His work illustrating fairy tales continues to have and effect on young and old alike. His renderings are intense, realist and startling.
